BAD COUTURE: upcycling workshop with Cindy Popper

Date: 10/12/2024

As we are nearing to New Year it is about time we recall our upcycling workshop we had a luck to host last year!

We’re sharing a glimpse into the BAD COUTURE upcycling workshop facilitated by @cindiepopper in December 2024. From raw ideas to experimental creation, Cindie shared her extended knowledge on fashion industry, valuable insights of history of the common fabrics and how clothing can be a political tool.

Pantyhose was the main material we worked with. A piece that used to be considered precious is now one of the most disposable items in our wardrobes. Nylon takes decades to break down, yet the material is flexible enough to be reworked many times, which made it perfect for this session.

The workshop moved step by step: first exploring the material, stretching it, cutting it, layering it, and figuring out how its tension behaves. Cindy guided the group through simple layering techniques and small experiments that gradually grew into individual designs. We combined pantyhose with various fabrics, twisted it into accessories, sculptural details, and improvised silhouettes. By the end, everyone had created their own look. We turned the room into a small runway and tried out our fits and had a great chance to reflect on the upcycling possibilities in our day to day.

Thank you to everyone who joined and shaped this space of collective creation! <3
